Bioceb

European Master in Biological and Chemical Engineering for a Sustainable Bioeconomy

Presentation at VENICE2022 (21st - 23rd November 2022)

From 21st to 23rd November 2022, Stéphanie Baumberger (Bioceb coordinator) attended VENICE2022 , the 9th international symposium on energy from biomass and waste. The different sessions and the final gala diner took place in the prestigious historical “Salone del Ridotto” at Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal.

Organised by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of ecological transition, the symposium aimed at drawing a state of the art of the situation relative to the production of energy from non-fossil fuels and the sustainability of the different technical routes.

In a session dedicated to specific biomass management, Stéphanie Baumberger gave a talk on lignin biorefinery and addressed the question of its contribution to the sustainability of bioenergy production. It was for her the opportunity to present some results obtained by the Zelcor project’s consortium (H2020 BBI-JU 2016-2021) and to introduce the concept of cascading biorefinery. She emphasized the need to combine bioenergy production with the production of biomolecules and biomaterials, through integrated biorefinery systems.

During these three days, Stéphanie Baumberger could discuss with Master’s and PhD students in chemical and environmental engineering, as well as with researchers and teachers involved in circular economy projects. These contacts will be very useful for the promotion of the Bioceb programme, for the placements of the students but also for the invitation of scholars.
