European Master in Biological and Chemical Engineering for a Sustainable Bioeconomy

Agrowebinar about biodiversity and bioeconomy (5th October 2022)

On October 5th 2022, Stéphanie Baumberger, Bioceb coordinator, participated to an "Agrowebinar" organised by Agreenium and acta - les instituts techniques agricoles.

The title was "La bioéconomie favorise-t-elle la durabilité des filières alimentaires ?" (Does bioeconomy favour the sustainability of the food indusry sectors?).

In her presentation dedicated to education, S. Baumberger explained how the contexte in AgroParisTech favoured the development of trainings in Bioeconomy and she presented two specific curricula in this field:

  • the “Biorefinery-Green chemistry” (BCV) engineer curriculum and
  • the European master in biological and chemical engineering for a sustainable bioeconomy (Bioceb).

Through these curricula, the students are trained to systemic approaches based on multidisciplinarity and intersectoriality. The modularity of the training generates a wide diversity of profiles able to cope with the different challenges of bioeconomy, among which the sustainability of food value chains. Through the Bioceb master, the students gain a global vision of bioeconomy systems and are trained to international collaborative research thanks to a 3-semester multi-site project (“Green line project”) tackeling the key environmental challenges of CO2 emission reduction, waste recycling, preservation of resources and design of sustainable processes and products. The valorization of lignocellulosic by-products from agro-food industry is one major question addressed by the projects.

These two examples of trainings illustrate how education contributes to transfers between academic research and industrial innovation and between territories. Such trainings supply a new generation of managers able to integrate all the step of a value chain and its socio-economic environment to design or optimize biomass transformation.
